About me
Marlene Emilia Dodd
Hello! My name is Marlene Emilia Dodd. I was born in Manchester and raised amongst the scenic landscapes of West Yorkshire in a town called Huddersfield. Three years ago, I moved to London to pursue my passion for filmmaking, after completing an Art Foundation at Leeds Arts University.
This summer I graduated from the BA(Hons) Film Practice Course where I was studying for the past three years at the London College of Communication - one of the six renowned colleges which make up the University of the Arts London (UAL).
During my time on this course I have undertaken the various roles of: production designer, producer, director of photography, 1st Ad, sound recordist and foley artist. Coming onto the course I didn’t have much experience on film sets so I wanted to try out a range of roles to see what skills were required for each as I knew this would put me in a stronger position going into the industry.
Recently I have also been booking out the studios at LCC. I have been collaborating with stylists, photographers, models and make up artists. Shooting both commercial work and portraits/headshots digitally and on film has been an invaluable experience and I hope to continue working within the realms of photography post university. I have been learning how to light subjects in a studio space, edit images using Lightroom and develop film photography. As the process is a lot quicker than film making I have found it allows for a lot of experimentation and spontaneity which is really exciting.
Since graduating I feel my main skill set lies in producing and production design but I am also keen to develop my skills and knowledge in the camera department.
I want to continue being a film maker post university as I have a keen interest in films which address real life issues in a fictional way. I love film’s storytelling power and how, for instance, it can expose the suffering and injustice that results from socioeconomic inequality. Filmmakers can bring about change by representing marginalized lives and by challenging people’s prejudice. Film has a kind of transformative magic in it. Also, film-making brings people together, and offers a cooperative platform for tapping into a group of people’s shared creativity. Working on films ensures that every day is different. It has enabled me to meet many different types of people and travel to new and interesting locations. The work is always varied and demanding and requires a unique blend of creative and practical skills. I enjoy the privilege of working on sets and stories with immensely talented and hardworking people. I hope to continue to bring stories to life while developing my own practise as I progress into the industry.
